***I wanted to extend a special thanks to Rick Poncheri and to Greg Blount, who are both students and good friends, for all of their assistance with these lessons.
Many of you have been asking about taking lessons on line and I'm happy to let you know that I'm involved with an online music school called MusicDojo.com. Some of the best music teachers in the country are involved already and more will be joining the faculty in the near future. The site is up and running and you can register at any time! Look for my classes on slapping (thumping & plucking). Check it out - here's the link!
For more information about lessons, email Anthony at antwellington1@aol.com or call 301-535-4589
Here is a great article written by S.K. Wallace for Mel Bay - Bass Sessions. Sheryl Wallace attended Gerald Veasley's Bass Boot Camp 2005 and was kind enough to write an article about her class with Anthony. Click this link to read the article!
Suggested Learning Material
HARMONY & THEORY
I've been collecting & reading theory books for 20 years and this one is my favorite. It's concise, to the point and explained in layman's terms. I am constantly rereading it and recommend it to all my students and musician friends. It's a MUST HAVE.
ZEN GUITAR
If you like philosophy tied to your musicianship, this is the book for you. I try to read this book at least twice a year and it always has an immediate effect when I read it. It gives a very good non-physical, non-cerebral, but very spiritual approach to playing a musical instrument.
READING CONTEMPORARY ELECTRIC BASS
This is a good book for intermediate to advanced note readers. It focuses less on notes and more on rhythms, which is what usually gives most people problems.
EFFORTLESS MASTERY
This is another book that approaches music from a philosophical/spiritual point of view. It features some meditations that are designed to address various problems or mental blockages that can hinder a musician from achieving their full potential.
101 BASS TIPS
This is a fun and useful book from a great bass player. It's good to see in print, a lot of tips that bass players just normally hear about.
BASS LOGIC
There are a lot of useful diagrams and charts in this book, a lot of which I pass out to my students.
GIANT STEPS
This book was written by a guitarist and is written in treble clef, but I think it's a must have for any bass player that's thinking of taking on the tune 'Giant Steps'. This book lays out a very logical and analytical way of approaching this tune.
STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN
This book was so good that it was made into a movie. This book details the musically historical life and sad death of James Jamerson. It features transcripts and includes a CD of his prominent recordings played by some of the most renowned bassists of today. This is a great book about a truly innovative player who defined the Motown sound.
This is a very detailed theory book with emphasis on Jazz theory. It lists recordings to reference examples of 'licks' that are notated in the book.
This is a good book for all the hard core 'Jazz guys' out there. It's full of transcripts of Charlie Parker's solos and you can get this book in bass clef. I bought it initially to study how Charlie Parker played over various ii-V changes.
